NORTH MIAMI | A Haitian woman holds a candle as she walks in a procession and prays with other Haitians during the first “Caravane de la Delivrance” (deliverance caravan) at Holy Family Parish in North Miami. The nine-day event, which included Masses, prayers, confessions, anointing of the sick, exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and performances by Haitian religious musicians and singers, began and ended with a procession through the church’s neighboring streets. Father Franky Jean, Holy Family pastor who organized the event, said it was a novena for people to pray for a resolution to their problems, to be hopeful in hard times and to put their trust in God, a God of deliverance. Although most of the approximately 8,000 people attending the events came from Florida and other parts of the United States, some came from as far away as Canada and Haiti. Father Jean said that the novena was so successful that he is planning another next year, Jan. 3–11, 2009.
